I have found it to be successful to let the kids decide what it is exactly that they would like to be assessed on. I feel that it provides them with more opportunity to take ownership and pride in their learning. As a summative assessment task for my grade 4 Net Games unit, I am allowing the students, in pairs, to decide upon or create 5 different skills that they would like to be assessed on at the end of this unit (next week). They can choose existing drills that they have done in class or they can create new drills. The aim of the assessment is to choose drills that they can handle in terms of their level of skill. I believe that all kids can achieve success if they think their way through a task, such as this, ultimately choosing what they can handle. The one requirement is that they must work in pairs hitting the ball to one another. The way in which they achieve this end is entirely up to their creative minds. The class went very well. They recorded what they want to be assessed on. I have taken this information and will create individualized assessment sheets for each group for next week's class. Please see slide show below and tune in next week for video of the summative assessment task....
