PYP PE: Invasion Games Warm Up Activities (with Maths Integration)
A fun warm up game that you can try out for Invasion Games is “Line Attack”. Aim of Game: To invade other team’s half gaining points by touching lines and returning to your own half without being tagged. Playing Area: This game is best played on a gym floor that has different lines on it. Scoring: Depending on how deep the students run into enemy territory, they get points for touching a line and returning to their own half without being tagged. You must determine, ahead of time, the number of points for each line. For example, if the student touches the closest line to the half, they get one point. 2 points for the line deeper than that, and three points for the deepest line etc. Rules of Engagement! v Students can touch only one line at a time and must return to their own half (for example, they cannot touch the 1-point line, then the 2-point, then 3-point and return to their own half accumulating 6 points. v If the students are tagged in enemy territory, there must be some form of fitness consequence (for example, 15 jumping jacks, 10 kick thrusts (burpees), or 5 push ups v On signal “Go” the game begins and lasts for roughly 2-3 minutes. On the whistle or “Stop” command, the students return to their own halves and calculate their team total v The students cannot be tagged in their own end of the playing area Maths Integration If you have read this far, an excellent way to integrate maths into this warm up game is to have a team chart up on the wall in their own end. Have pencils ready under each chart (5 or 6 pencils per team). Once the students scores points, they must run back to their own end and mark these points on the paper. Once the game concludes, the students must go back and tally their points by grouping points in 10s with remainder single points. For example, if the team tallies 67 points, this total would be broken down into 6 groups of 10 with 7 remaining = 67 points Increasing Maths Difficulty: For grades, you could bring decimal points or fractions into the game by having point totals as follows: Closest Line is worth 0.25 points or ¼ Next Line is worth 0.50 points or ½ Third Line is worth 0.75 points or ¾ Learner Profile Focus for this Activity Risk Taker: The students must take risks to get more points Principled: They must be honest when recording or calculating their own points Thinker: They must use mental math and use their addition skills during the cool down session when they calculate their team total.
