Introductory Gymnastics and Movement to Music Lesson Plan for Kindergarten

My lesson objectives and learning experiences for this lesson are below. The lesson went very well and worked toward tapping into the students' creativity and imagination.

Lesson Objectives

A. To introduce central idea and lines of inquiry(see previous blog for CI & LOI)
B. To discuss movement patterns
C. To identify specific movement patterns in a Cirque Du Soleil video clip
D. To explore imaginary movements based on what the wind looks and sounds like.

Learning Experiences
  1. Introduce central idea and lines of inquiry
  2. Discuss patterns by having kids look around the room for specific visible patterns (the first one they came up with was the patterned colours on the gymnastics mats)
  3. Show video clip of Cirque Du Soleil and discuss specific patterns of movements that the kids can see
  4. Watch second Cirque Du Soleil video clip of a routine using scarves.
  5. Introduce the idea of ‘Wind’ to the students asking the following questions; What does wind sound like? How does it move? How does it change speed?
  6. Play Cirque Du Soleil song called “The Wind”
  7. Ask students to explore moving their bodies like the wind, but to do so safely in space. They are given scarves to use while they move around the mat.
  8. Stop song every so often to reinforce the following; the changing speed of wind, the changing direction of wind, the changing sound of wind, wind traveling high and low, wind traveling in unpredictable patterns.

Final Task

Have the students create a 3-5 wind movement pattern that can be repeated to the song “The Wind”.

Teacher Reflection

Although this lesson went very well, I probably would have had them move around like the wind without the scarves first then had them move with the scarves afterward. Doing so would have gotten them more use to the limited space that they had.

Please see video below of when they were moving around with the scarves.
