Students designing their own schools? Is it possible? Watch the video below to see some amazing learning taking place. Can this model be applied to PE? I think it can be. What do you think?

That begs an interesting question...

Would it be feasible to think that elementary students pull this off? It is definitely interesting to say the least!

Shawn, I not only believe it is possible, I am putting it to the test in my next unit, Athletics. I am going to make the Student Learning Outcomes very clear to the students during the pre-assessment phase of the unit. In kid-friendly language, I am going to introduce what it is that they are expected to know and do by the end of the unit.

I will let them know what their resources are; the running track, the jumping pits, stopwatches, cones, throwing implements, pencils, clipboards etc. Once I am sure that they know what the Student Learning Outcomes are, I am going to set them off designing what learning activities they will create throughout the unit in order to meet the Student Learning Outcomes at the end of the unit.

I am there to facilitate and help in any way of course, but I want them to take ownership over their learning journey. I have already explained this to them and they are pumped about being given this opportunity.

A lot of maths integration will the place with the measuring of time and distance as well which flows nicely with what they are learning in class at the moment.

I will document this all on my blog over the next few weeks, so stay tuned to see how it all works out.

I am very excited to see the results! I am in the process of writing my own planners and will be doing an Athletics unit very soon. Maybe we can Skype some ideas back and forth? I think my class size and school provides some interesting challenges.

Shawn, would be very happy to Skype ideas back and forth with you. I am posting a blog later today about my upcoming Athletics unit and how I am going to address the Student Learning Outcomes. Check it out. If you can, send me your email address. Where are you presently working? Talk later
