Even though our grade 4/5s are classed together, at this moment, the Grade 5s are working on their PYP exhibition. Therefore, the grade 4s and 5s have been separated for the entirety of the exhibition. The grade 4s are doing a unit on Peace and Conflict, so the elementary PE department has decided to fully integrate with this unit through Movement to Music. We will be showing the students different forms of tribal/war dance, as well as dances related to the concept of peace. At the end of the unit, our goal is to have the students choose elements from the different dances that they have learned and piece together their own dance based on the concepts of either peace or conflict.
As you know, there are some excellent You Tube videos of dance and we intend on showing the students some of these dances. I came across the War Dance which is a documentary filmed in northern Uganda. This video is amazing. It is highly inspiring, but at the same time brings to life the harsh realities that many children in Uganda have faced in the past. We will start our integration off by showing the students the 10-minute trailor that you can see below. Let me know your thoughts and post any other recommeded videos that you may have seen or used in the past to create dance.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUAxDAJa-ro

This is a guesstimation type game that challenges the students to work on teams while using different body parts to measure the distance from one point to another using lines on the court. I have done the lesson with both the kindergarten/G1 and G2/3 classes this week. I started each class with the students laying down head to toe in a line and count how many bodies it took for them to cross the length of the court. I would have the team guesstimate the number first and write it down and then compare to the actual number that it took. See the slide show below for other ways we measured the distance across the court. The grade 2/3 class is doing a unit on 'Money' right now, so as an extention, I posed different challenges to them to spark their thinking in Maths. For example, if it took 34 legs to cross the court, I told them that each leg was 25 cents or a quarter and asked them how many dollars and cents that was. We used other currencies as well to challenge them into doing this mental maths activity. The next unit for us in PE is 'Movement to Music' which will be fully integrated with two grade levels (kindergarten-G1 & G4/5). In kindergarten/G1 the main theme deals with the way people can express themselves through the arts. In particular, how we can show emotion/thoughts/feelings through dance in PE. As a warm-up, preassessment activity, we are going to play ten different pieces of music from a wide variety of styles ex.- 60s music, country and western, opera, African etc.). We will play each piece for roughly two minutes allowing the kids to freely express themselves in whatever way they want (running, turning, twisting, jumping, rolling etc.). They must then connect this piece of music with some type of emotion. On the assessment sheet below, you can see the different emotions on the right side of the page. They must draw a line connecting which emotion they feel fits best......We'll see how it goes.. |
